When Frank Ocean revealed in a letter last summer that his first love was another man , the walls of bigotry so crackproof in hip hop , slowly began to tumble down.
Ocean , leading member of a hip hop collective usually derided for its homophobia The Odd Future , had started a seachange in attitudes in the hop hop community. He was supported warmly for his honesty within the community and praised by gay rights organisations worldwide.
This seachange continues , thanks to Seattle rapper Macklemore, whose stunning pro-gay anthem Same Love shot to Number 1 this week in Australia. A feat , taht I would not be surprised was repeated worldwide. Macklemore , himself is straight. A straight rapper rapping in support of gay marriage. Times have changed.
Same Love is the gay anthem Born This Way wishes it was, Not that I want to diss Gaga;s song , which i still love. But Macklemore's Same Love , feels more honest , real sincere even. It's brave , moving and strangely beautiful.
Mary Lamberts vocal on the chorus is stunning. The lyrics , are so of this time. Packing power and conviction.
Macklemore said Misogyny and homophobia are the two acceptable means of oppression in hip-hop culture. It's 2012. There needs to be some accountability. I think that as a society we're evolving and I think that hip hop has always been a representation of what's going on in the world right now."
The lyrics are stunning. Don't press pause
Progress, march on!
With a veil over our eyes
We turn our back on the cause
'Till the day
That my uncles can be united by law
Kids are walkin' around the hallway
Plagued by pain in their heart
A world so hateful
Some would rather die
Than be who they are
And a certificate on paper
Isn't gonna solve it all
But it's a damn good place to start
No law's gonna change us
We have to change us
Whatever god you believe in
We come from the same one
Strip away the fear
Underneath it's all the same love
About time that we raised up
I take my hat off to Macklemore . Stunning track that deserves widespread airplay and success.
