THE 101 ULTIMATE TRACKS OF 2017

So , 2017 is almost done and dusted. And like the iconic Madonna hit , "music makes the people come together ".
This was in stark evidence in May when a terrorist attack left 22 dead in Manchester following an Ariana Grande concert. That one of music's greatest cities should give us one of the defining moments in music this year at the One Love Manchester concert. It is testament to the power and resilience and power of music in 2017.

Kesha rose like a phoenix to deliver a triumph of an album. Taylor Swift threw more shade than an episode of Drag Race with her comeback. Dua Lipa rewrote the rules and we all stood back and complied. Ed Sheeran was the definition of ubiquity this year , dominating the airwaves all year long.
Veteran pop luminaries such as Pink showed they can still strike a chord and sell millions in the process. Katy Perry got woke , Lana showed us her Lust For Life and Lorde produced possibly the album of the year.
In hip hop , Kendrick Lamar told us to be humble , Jay Z returned and Eminem also stormed back. Then there was the invasion of Latino music as Despacito claimed the summer and Camila Cabello's solo career took full flight with the massive Havana.

Rock saw old reliables such as Foo Fighters , The Killers , U2 , and Elbow deliver new albums. whilst young blood such as Alt J and Royal Blood continued to stretch the boundaries of the genre.

And here , once again , we count down the annual 101 greatest tracks of the year. An accolade previously won by Frank Ocean , Sia , Beyoncé and Daft Punk.

1. FOUND WHAT I'VE BEEN LOOKING FOR  Tom Grennan

Tom Grennan is poised to be THE soundtrack of 2018. With his debut album Lightning Matches due on March 9th, the Bedford singer songwriter is set to be catapulted to stardom. Found What I've Been Looking For is EVERYTHING we needed in a sometimes bleak and frustrating year. Anthemic , resilient , emotive and a voice that is balm for the soul. Grenann is authentic and his voice gritty and more mature than his years.

He will dominate 2018 , but in 2017 , Found What I've Been Looking For is The Playlist's Ultimate track of 2017.

Thursday 7 December 2017

Lightning In A Bottle - Tom Grennan set to capture hearts and minds in 2018

Tom Grennan once said about writing songs whilst being dyslexic  "mentally I put songs on a washing line. So then I pick the odd socks , lyrically. And then I put an odd sock to an odd sock and think "How can I make that a pair of pearly whites "

Well , those pearly whites have come to fruition in the shape of his highly anticipated debut album Lightning Matches which drops on March 9th 2018. The Bedford singer songwriters lyrical approach may be unorthodox, But the man himself has built up a legion of fans with his everyman personality coupled with a raw and emotive voice that is set to soundtrack 2018.

It could all have been so different for the 21 year old though. Instead of lining up a long awaited debut album , Tom could have found himself on the England team heading to Russia next summer. Grennan had a promising football career , running out for Northampton Town , Lution Town , Aston Villa and Stevenage.
However he'll just have to make do with lighting up next summers festival circuit. Its probably just as well Glastonbury is on hiatus next summer as Grennan would more than likely steal the show down Worthy Farm.

Tom discovered that unmistakeable voice  at a "piss up " and his head was soon turned by music. Its little stories like this that have endeared him to an ever increasing faithful.

Dates for his tour next year are already vanishing ahead of the release of his hotly anticipated debut album Lightning Matches on March 9th

For a guy who at the tender age of 21 is on the cusp of stardom ,  Grennan's voice sounds older than his year. A primal , raw and gravelly voice infused with warmth , emotion and true grit. His lyrics and songs are certainly that of a 21 year old finding his way in this crazy world. None so more evident on the rousing closing track of his stunning EP Release The Brakes , the fantastic This Is The Age.

"raise a glass to those who choose to live without. I dont need no keys for a castle or a ticket to the stars. So close your eyes and know how lucky you are "

Grennan as you can guess from his surname , has Irish blood running through his Bedford born veins and his voice recalls the earthy , gritty soul that emanates from a good old fashioned Irish session.

On the awesone Royal Highness , Tom displays an irresistible swagger on an absolute stomper of a track. Bowed down and beseeched to his lady in waiting , its a track that will cause much fervour during his upcoming UK dates.
The video shows the sheer star quality of the guy. Evidence of this was further displayed in his cameo in Charli XCX's Boys video.  And with his down to earth charm and lush vocals , Grennan doesn't look at all out of place with such pop pin ups as Joe Jonas and Dplo. In fact he clearly belongs there

His Found What I've Been Looking For EP is a joy to listen to from start to finish. The title track , which he recently performed on primetime Friday night BBC1 music show Sounds Like Friday Night. It is my track of the year here at The Playlist.
A sure fire anthem that will be the soundtrack to many a festival weekend next summer.

Interestingly enough , Tom has stated that he listens to at least one Amy Winehouse track a day. And if the late great Queen of Camden Town could break your heart with vulnerability and soaring vocals. Then Tom does exactly the same on the demo of Silhouette.  Its raw , vulnerable and  as soaring as the London skyline. Here is where Grennan stretches his vocal muscles to devastating effect. He sounds wise beyond his years yet coupled with the fragility of early adulthood. Its a stunning track.

And just before that track were treated to the jaunty First Day Of The Sun. Another uplifting , bouncy , festival bound sing a long. Grennan goes from the highs of youth - partying with your mates , falling in love to the lows such as heartbreak and self doubt. It just shows how adept he is at veering from ripping your heart out one minute and making you sing your heart out the next.
.

2018 is set to be the year of Tom Grennan. In these uncertain times of Brexit and Trump , Grennan and his voice and youthful vigour are balm for the soul. The Bedford boy done good will break your heart , lift your sagging spirits and more than likely make more than a few girls and some boys fall in love with him in the coming year.
Your summer festival soundtrack Lightning Matches drops on March 9th. And when it does , stand a few inches back cos Tom Grennan is bringing the fire in 2018. And long may the flames roar

Pink storms back with What About Us as new album Beautiful Trauma comfirmed

The long wait is over. Pink will release her seventh album Beautiful Trauma on October 13th. The 13 song collection is lead by the pulsating and anthemic new single What About Us. The track premiered at lunchtime today and is already scaling iTunes charts globally. By far , its her strongest lead single since 2008's So What.

The track starts as piano led ballad before erupting into a powerful synth laden stomper. Pink's vocals are as strong and defiant as ever. Lyrically , the track harks to some of Pink's usual underdog themes "Sticks and stones they may break my bones , /But then I'll be ready " and "What about all the broken , happy ever afters "
The dance infused synths are a welcome departure for the singer. And the track is bound to give her another well earned Number 1.

Meanwhile , Beautiful Trauma will come over five years since 2012's The Truth About Love. That album spawned the US Number 1 Grammy nominated smash Just Give Me A Reason with Nate Ruess.
Since then , Pink has appeared alongside Dallas Green on 2014's side project You+Me. The duo released the acoustic folk of Rose Ave.
Last summer Pink appeared on Setting the World On Fire with country legend Kenny Chesney. Earlier this year she appeared alongside Sia on the track Waterfall by production whiz Stargate.

Pink line sup new single

It's been a long time coming , but finally Pink is set to return. The pop icon will release What About Us on August 10th.
It trails her forthcoming as yet untitled seventh album. It comes five years after her last album The Truth About Love. The 2012 album spawned the hits Blow Me ( One Last Kiss ) , Try and the Grammy nominated US Number 1 Just Give Me A Reason.

In the five years since her last album , Pink has given birth to a son Jameson. In 2014 , she released an album alongside Dallas Green as part of the folk duo You+Me. Last year she released the underwhelming Just Like Fire from the Disney movie Alice Through The Looking Glass. As well as that she teamed up with US country star Kenny Chesney on the track Setting The World On Fire.
Earlier this year , she teamed up with Stargate and Sia on the track Waterfall.

The star has made her return to the live scene with well received shows at numerous US festivals. She headlines V Festival in the UK next month alongside Jay Z.

Her much anticipated seventh album is rumoured for release this autumn. The five year gap is her longest between records.

Lorde premieres Green Light

Lorde has finally unveiled her highly anticipated new single Green Light. The New Zealand pop sensation has also premiered the accompanying video. The song will trail her sophomore album Melodrama.

Green Light is a far more uplifting track than her previous work. Its euphoric sad pop with an addictive piano hook.  As promised by the singer herself , the new material certainly captures the fluorescent past two years of her life.

Melodrama follows 2013's Pure Heroine which catapulted the 20 year old Kiwi singer to instant stardom. The huge single Royals was a worldwide smash and saw her pick up a string of Grammy Awards.

This new album is helmed by Jack Antonoff of US pop-rock triumvirate Fun. Antonoff produced many of the stand out tracks on Taylor Swift's massive 1989 album , including Out Of The Woods.

Coldplay and The Chainsmokers team up on new single

The Chainsmokers and Coldplay have teamed up in one of the years most surprising collaborations. The duos took to the BRIT Awards in London last night for the first performance of Something Just Like This. And after repeated listen , this strangest of musical bedfellows works extremely well.

It looks et to give The Chainsmokers another massive worldwide smash ahead of the release of their debut album Memories...Do Not Open.

Alex Pall and Drew Taggart have had enormous success in the past year with the worldwide success of Closer alongside Halsey. Last week they won their first Grammy for the summer smash Don't Let Me Down featuring Daya.

BRITS 2017 - Bowie scoops double at muted ceremony

2016 wasn't exactly a vintage year. And last nights BRIT Awards demonstrated that in a remarkably restrained and underwhelming ceremony.

The late David Bowie proved to be the biggest winner of the night with deserved wins for MasterCard British Album Of The Year which was presented by Noel Gallagher. The former Oasis guitarist was clearly not turning up to hand a gomg to The 1975 so his appearance was a mild surprise. Bowie also won Best British Male.

Rising star Rag N Bone Man also had a memorable night winning Critics Choice and Best British Breakthrough after his debut album Human tallied the highest first week sales of a debut album this decade.
Elsewhere , there were wins for The 1975 who picked up the Best British Group and performed a bouncy version of hit single The Sound. The performance confused many viewers at home with its running commentary on screen critiscising the group .

Little Mix opened the ceremony in spectacular style with Shout Out To My Ex , which would later win Best British Single. Its the girls first and overdue BRITS win
The other big pop performanc eof the night came from Katy Perry with new single Chained To The Rhythm. The US star performed amongst a sea of white houses and larger than life puppets thought to be based on Donald Trump and Theresa May.

Its hard to take Perry's 'purposeful pop ' seriously. This is the same woman who mocked Britney Spears mental breakdown on the red carpet at last weeks Grammys. And a performer whose image has been that of a carefully controlled cartoon character who once squirted cream from her breasts in the California Gurls video.

The tribute to the late George Michael was one of the nights high points. Andrew Ridgeley his Wham bandmate , accompanied by Pepsi and Shirley gave an emotional speech about the much missed pop legend.
Chris Martin of Coldplay then appeared to perform a moving version of A Different Corner , with interspersed verses from Michael himself.

Martin re-appeared later for a much hyped collaboration with US dance pop duo The Chainsmokers.

Elsewhere , other winners included One Direction who won Best British Artist Video despite splitting in 2015 , making a complete mockery of the fan voted category.
Adele once again won Best Global Success , as her BRITS wins edges towards double figures.

The show was closed by Robbie Williams who gave a by the numbers performance of tracks from his current album The Heavy Entertainment Show. Ironic , as this was a  ceremony that was light on anything entertaining. Hosts Dermot O'Leary and Emma Willis gave an polished if uncharismatic performance as hosts. But still far more likable than James Cordens sycophancy of ceremonies past.

Katy Perry challenges conformity in Chained To The Rhythm video

Say what you want about Katy Perry. But almost a decade into her career , nobody else does a great pop visual like the Firework singer. This continues with the premiere of Chained To The Rhythm.

Perry finds herself immersed in the day glo sheen of the Oblivi amusement park , surrounded by Stepford Wives-esque characters ambling from one high thrill ride to the next. The video clearly takes inspiration from the songs Sia and max Martin penned lyrics.

Ignorance is bliss for Perry and her fellow park goers living in their bubble , unaware of their conformity. Its only when Perry peicks her finger on a rose thorn and her collaborator Skip Marley makes an appearance in 3D , that Katy begins to snap out of her bubble.

Its another video triumph to add to Perry's long list of visual classics like Waking Up In Vegas , .E.T , Last Friday Night and Firework.

Perry releases her long awaited follow up to 2013's PRISM later this year. She performs tomorrow night at the BRIT Awards.

Gaga premieres bawdy and chaotic John Wayne video

Lady Gaga has capped off a triumphant week with the premiere of new video John Wayne. Hot on the heels of her SuperBowl HalfTime showstopping performance and the announcement of her Joanne World Tour starting in August.

John Wayne , her third video collaboration with the legendary Jonas Akerlund is a riotous return to visual form. Following the stripped down videos for Perfect Illusion and Million Reasons , John Wayne is a bawdy and neon dripped riot.

Quite possibly Gaga's best video since 2011's Born This Way era , the video sees her ride horseback , involved in car chases and ends with Gaga shooting bullets from her high heels.

GagaBowl - Gaga slays SuperBowl with iconic performance

Lady Gaga stormed the Pepsi HalfTime Show at last nights SuperBowl in Houston's packed NRG Stadium.
The singer performed a showstopping , high octane set full of her trademark hits , powerhouse vocals and blistering choreography. It was a career defining performance that will silence critics and re-establish the star as an indomitable and beloved pop force.

Gaga began the 13 minute set atop the NRG Stadium to sing a medley of  God Save America and This Land Is Your Land. The latter has become a political protest anthem in the wake of Donald Trumps inauguration.
With that , Gaga dove headfirst from the stadium into a darkened stadium on a high rise wire before settling atop a constructed performance tower.  Precded by brief snippets of Dance In The Dark , The Edge Of Glory and Paparazzi. Gaga launched into a barnstorming rendition of 2009's break out classic Pokerface to a rapturous reception.

This was followed by 2011's equality anthem Born This Way. The choreography and vocals were vintage Gaga. She then launched into Telephone , her 2010 smash with Beyoncé. It was fun , frenetic and even saw Gaga whip out her much missed disco stick.

Gone was the stripped down acoustics and bar room grittiness of the recent Joanne era. This was the Lady Gaga we fell for in 2009. And the nostalgia was ramped up further with a bouncy version of her debut smash Just Dance. Eight years on from when it topped charts worldwide.

Gaga slowed down the pace with recent single , the torch song fragility of Million Reasons. Easily , Gaga's greatest ballad and her greatest hit that never was. Gaga was in full voice amidst candles and lanterns. It was a glorious moment. she took to the crowd below and embraced a fan.

The set ended with her biggest hit , the now legendary Bad Romance. It capped off a incredible performance which reminded us all why Gaga is one of the greatest popstars on the planet. It wa selectric from start to finish with a brilliantly judged setlist. And singer whose passion and pizazz captivated almost a billion people globally.

Joanne may have been ignored commercially , despite it being one of her best albums. But last nights HalfTime show will only remind the public of the magic that Gaga can whip up and a back catalogue that belies her young years.
As expected most of that back catalogue is now re-entering iTunes charts worldwide following the universally acclaimed performance.
Gaga proved to be every bit as thrilling as past performances from Michael Jackson , U2, Beyoncé , Bruce Springsteen and Prince.

With a new tour scheduled for this Autumn and rumours of an impending sixth studio album , Lady Gaga may very well be ready to reclaim her throne as pop's first Lady

As well as dancing in clubs , hanging out at bonfires and shooting a few rounds of pool.

James Leon unleashes his Zen

Looking to blow the cobwebs off your dry January. Well , The Playlist favourite James Leon has just the elixir for you. It comes in the intoxicating form of his brand new single , the power pop arms aloft anthemics of  Zen (To The Power )

Zen ( To The Power ) trails Leon's forthcoming four track EP also entitled Zen. The EP includes the Club Clique remix of previous hedonistic bop I Love The Music (The First Night ). We waxed lyrical about that track from the moment we heard it,

But on Zen ( To The Power ) , Leon has cranked up the clubby pulsing beats and sweet vocals on a call to arms chorus that echoes Erasure meets Years and Years. The track is an aural delight , full of upbeat optimism after a grim 2016 tinged with the 2am haze of a London dancefloor. The London based electro -pop powerhouse has never sounded better. Its swirling , hedonistic and emotive.

The punchy , defiant chorus is an absolute earworm , that builds and builds to a rapturous all out massive attack of pure pop perfection. It sounds current  despite some of Leon's past 80's leaning offerings. This time though , that retro vibe sounds like a delightful mix of late 90s dance with modern pop sensibilities. What holds this track and pins it so wonderfully is Leon's swooping , soaring vocal.  As ever , he recalls the love child of Andy Bell and Neil Tennant , but his vocal is instinctively his. These comparisons are just subtle nuances of an underrated pop vocalist.
Zen (To The Power ) would not feel out of place on an album by Erasure and The Pet Shop Boys. An easy retro comparison indeed. But its sound and swooping pop puts it firmly in the realm of Years and Years , The 1975 and the very best Scandipop  of Robyn ,  Zara Larsson et al.

The matching video shows a vibrant fast-paced journey through modern London, providing an energy which reflects the heady highs and lows of life in London. From the stark industrial vistas of kings Cross to the disappearing artistic community of Hackney.

The video is directed by the amazing Susan Supecharged. An artist as well as a film maker working from her studio in Hackney Wick. Her films work incorporates a lo-fi hi-fi derived from Burroughs cut up technique. Hailing from the historic East Village Art Music and Fashion scene in 1980's New York, Susan’s personal history is as heady and unique as her artwork. As a model she was known as the model with the super 8, filming as she sashayed down the runway. The films are in the archives of the metropolitan museum in New York, and have shown in exhibitions in US and the ICA in London.

Shes certainly brought the video to life in contemporary London and paints a palette of city life to Leon's high octane track.
