The Big Reunion -5 Great Pop Moments

The Big Reunion starts on ITV2 tonight , reuniting late 90's pop acts Five , B*Witched , Atomic Kitten , Liberty X , 911 and the Honeyz.

I thought I'd post up 5 of the greatest pop gems from some of the acts featured. The series iteself on ITV2 will focus on the halcyon days of eacha ct , culminating in  a huge , nostaglia filled reunion gig in London

Lets take a look a 5 Big Reunion Pop Moments from that glorious era

1. Five -Keep on Movin (Number 1 , October 1999 )

Sean, Abs , Richie , J and Scott were touted as the Spice Boys upon their debut in 1997. This remains their finest moment and a  boyband classic

2. B"Witched -C'est La Vie ( Number 1 , May 1998 )

Dressed in their trademark denim and faux Irish influence , Keavy , Edele , Sinead and Lyndsay had 4 consecutive Number 1's . But its this gem that is most fondly remembered for its Irish dancing and classic line " Fight like me Da as well "

3.  Honeyx -Finally Found ( Top 5 , September 1998 )

Honeyz emerged on the scene with this gorgeous ballad. At first glance they seemd like a bad Eternal rip off. But this song remains gorgeous

4. 911 -Bodyshakin (Number 3 , April 1997 )

911 were probably the least aesthetically pleasing of all boybands. But Lee, Spike and Jimmy had a loyal fanbase and clocked up the odd Number 1 in their time. This being most memorbale

5. Atomic Kitten -Whole Again ( Number 1 , February 2001 )

Atomic Kitten were close to being dropped from their record label shortly before this was released. They'd had a few Top 10's , but nothing that set the world alight/ Kerry Katona had also just fallen pregnant and soon left the band. Replaced by Jenny Frost , Whole Again would spend 4 weeks at Number 1 , keeping U2 off and making them a hot pop commodity til their split in 2005

One Direction butcher Blondie for charity

Comic Relief celebrates its 25th anniversary with this years Red Nose Day on March 15th. And as traditional as the marathon TV show featuring the biggets names in comedy , the Comic Relief charity single has become a pop institution.
Spice Girls , Boyzone , Girls Aloud , Sugababes , The Saturdays , McFly and The Wanted have all released a cover for Comic Relief over the years with huge sucess..

Step forward One Direction. This year Harry , Zayn and the other three will "cover " Blondie's classic One Way Or Another for the charity. They will premiere the track at the Brit Awards on February 20th. The track is available from March 17th and proceeds go to charidee. Cue their 3rd Number 1. Just dont tell Debbie Harry

THE MONDAY MIXTAPE

Welcome to The Monday Mixtape. This new weekly feature on The Playlist will feature the most random tracks in the following categories
                                                - For Dancing euphorically
                                                 -For lovers
                                                -For the loneliest night
-For the times we live in
                                   - For old times sake
                                           -For the smiles

So shall we begin......

FOR DANCING EUPHORICALLY

Katy B feat. Ms Dynamite -Lights On

Katy is on her way back this year. This is still an absolute , solid gold corker

FOR LOVERS

Benzel & Jessie Ware -If You Love Me

I'm an old romantic.  And you cant make a tape without a little romantic gem. Jessie Ware's voice is pure velvet. Her 90s R&B influences come full circle with this sensuous version of Brownstone's 90's gem. Cuddle up , have a weep , hug a pillow.

FOR THE LONELIEST NIGHT

Raglans -Roll Away

One of my favourite new Irish talents.  An uplifting , everyman lament that will soundtrack some dramatic montage in RTES Raw some time. Fantastic stuff.

FOR THE TIMES WE LIVE IN

Macklemore &Ryan Lewis feat. Mary Lambert -Same Love

Macklemore's heartfelt advocacy of gay marriage is packed with stunning conviction and beautiful vocals from Mary Lambert. This track couldnt be more relevant or needed right now.

FOR OLD TIMES

Solid Harmonie -I'll Be There For You

I'm feeling nostalgic old skool 90s pop like this long forgotten Brit girlband. ITV2 will soon screen The Big Reunion , bringing Five , 911 , Honeyz , Liberty X , Atomic Kitten and B2Witched back together.
This pop stomper from the late 90s makes me yearn for the 90s again

FOR THE SMILES & ENDORPHINS

Taylor Swift -22

Her next single is as poppy as she gets. Stupidly catchy , no frills , young and free and unsahamedly bordering on cheese. And I like cheese

Timberlake announces new album

Justin Timberlake has finally announced the release date and title of his brand new album. The 20/20 Experience hits Irish stores on March 15th , the UK on the 18th and the next day in the US.
Coming almost seven years after FutureSex/Lovesounds , The 20/20 Experience is only Timberlake;s 3rd solo outing.

It's already spawned the massive Suit And Tie , featuring Jay Z , which is currently chasing the top spot in the US. Timberlake has been working on the album since last June

Madonna Still the Queen

2012 may not have been a banner year in the phenomenal 30 year career of Madonna. Her last album MDNA was poorly received and failed to spawn the usual huge hits you'd expect from the Queen of Pop. Her subsequent tour was also mer with widespread criticism. In short , last year , it became somewhat cool to slag off Madonna.
But guess what , Madonna is now officially the top grossing female touring artist OF ALL TIME. You cannot keep this woman down. And when shes down , she still breaks records. Madonna is Madonna. An icon , living legend , phenomenon , who has at this point in her career not an iota to prove. Not to Elton John , not to Lady Gaga ,  not to critics , hell not to anyone. When Madonna rolls into town , you get spectacle , you get entertainment , you get controversy , whether it contrived or corny. You get the all conquering Queen of Pop.

The MDNA tour amassed an amazing $305million , making it Billboards 10th biggest tour of all time. Say what you want , but that is no mean feat. The 68 date tour which began in Israel in May and ended in December in Argentina was the biggest tour of 2012.
Beyonce , Pink , Rihanna , and indeed Lady Gaga , still have some distance to go.

Madonna albums will always hit the top spot worldwide. She may not be seen as relevant anymore or played as much on video channels. But for as long as she can do it , Madonna will always be a top draw as a live act.
We've learnt over 30 glorious years , that you write her off at your peril. She'll have another hit. She always does. Shes fucking Madonna

Tegan And Sara Aim For Big Leagues

For just under a decade , sisters Tegan and Sara have built up a cult following for their heartfelt indie folk and count Pink , amongst others as fan. Commercial success has eluded them , not taht thye've ever consciously chased it.
However with new album Hearthrob ,which is currently streaming in its entirety on both Popjustice.com and RollinStone.com , the sisters are set to step forth from the shadows and cross over into the big leagues.

Their forthcoming set mixes pop elements with dance and synth beats and is in short , a triumph. A bigger fanbase awaits. These songs are brilliantly crafted and could very be the siblings commercial day in the sun.

Heartthrob is released February 12th.

Bressie readies new album

Apart from being a perennial sex symbol and everybody's favourite judge on RTE's The Voice , Bressie is also a very fine and somewhat overlooked master of a great pop song.
This was evident from both of The Blizzards stellar albums and his own solo album , 2011's Colourblind Stereo.

Now , this coming Monday , the trailer single from Bressie's second solo offering will hit the airwaves. Bressie tweeted  " Guys , my first single from my second solo album goes to radio Monday. Shitting it "

I'm sure he'll have no need. Bressies been busy in london working on his forthcoming , as yet untitled album.

Robbie Announces new single

Robbie Williams "comeback " continues apace. Robbie has announced that Be A Boy will serve as the 3rd single to be taken from last years massive Take The Crown album. It follows the chart topping Candy and its epic if chart shy follow up Different.

Williams will perform at next months Brit Awards. Be A Boy is released March 11th

Tom Odell Covers Taylor Swift For Radio 1

Tom Odell is another of 2013's new bright, young things tipped for success. The 22 year old Chichester songwriter was bestowed with the Brit Awards Critics Choice in December. He will collect the award at the bash on February 20th , the first ever male winner. Following in the footsteps of past winners Adele , Jessie J and Emeli Sande, commercial success is all but guaranteed.

This week , Odell dropped by Radio 1's Live Lounge with Fearne Cotton. He performed Another Love from last Octobers Songs from Another Love EP. As well as that ,  his obligatory cover was a wonderful take on Taylor Swift's I Knew You Were Trouble.

Swift tweeted of the cover -" So I was already a @TomOdell superfan...Now I'm just floored. This is so good "

Tom Odell will release his debut album Long Way Down on April 15th

Kodaline have "High Hopes "

High hopes is exactly what many have in 2013 for Dublin lads Steven Garrigan ,Vinny May , Jason Boland and Mark Prendergast -Kodaline.
Their anthemic , lighters aloft Coldplay-esque rock is sure to soundtrack many a dramatic TV montage this year.

Today , the lads have debuted the new video for forthcoming single High Hopes. Emotive and cinematic , Kodaline are ready and poised for a mammoth year.

Macklemore Advocates "Same Love "

When Frank Ocean revealed in a letter last summer that his first love was another man , the walls of bigotry so crackproof in hip hop  , slowly began to tumble down.
Ocean , leading member of a hip hop collective usually derided for its homophobia The Odd Future , had started a seachange in attitudes in the hop hop community. He was supported warmly for his honesty within the community and praised by gay rights organisations worldwide.

This seachange continues , thanks to Seattle rapper Macklemore, whose stunning pro-gay anthem Same Love shot to Number 1 this week in Australia. A feat , taht I would not be surprised was repeated worldwide. Macklemore , himself is straight. A straight rapper rapping in support of gay marriage. Times have changed.
Same Love is the gay anthem Born This Way wishes it was, Not that I want to diss Gaga;s song , which i still love. But Macklemore's Same Love , feels more honest , real sincere even. It's brave , moving and strangely beautiful.
Mary Lamberts vocal on the chorus is stunning. The lyrics , are so of this time. Packing power and conviction.
Macklemore said  Misogyny and homophobia are the two acceptable means of oppression in hip-hop culture. It's 2012. There needs to be some accountability. I think that as a society we're evolving and I think that hip hop has always been a representation of what's going on in the world right now."

The lyrics are stunning.  Don't press pause
Progress, march on!
With a veil over our eyes
We turn our back on the cause

'Till the day
That my uncles can be united by law

Kids are walkin' around the hallway
Plagued by pain in their heart

A world so hateful
Some would rather die
Than be who they are

And a certificate on paper
Isn't gonna solve it all
But it's a damn good place to start

No law's gonna change us
We have to change us

Whatever god you believe in
We come from the same one

Strip away the fear
Underneath it's all the same love
About time that we raised up

I take my hat off to Macklemore . Stunning track that deserves widespread airplay and success.

Schamazing ???

Fresh from her triumphant stint as a judge on the The X Factor , Nicole Scherzinger is primed to unleash her forthcoming single Boomerang.
The ex-Pussycat Doll will premiere the new single on Thursday January 24th. The song was produced by the ubiquitous Will I Am, and comes from her second album due out later this year.

Not much to go on , as so far we've only been treated to a preview clip of her new video this morning. But Boomerang is bound to give Scherzy another huge hit. And the preview snippet indicates another thunderous stomper.

Disclosure team up with AlunaGeorge

Two  of 2013's most hotly tipped acts have come together for a track I predict will hit the UK top spot at the end of March.
Dsiclosure , who are still riding high with the sublime Latch , have teamed up with BBC Sound of 2013 runners up AlunaGeorge who today unveiled the tracklisting for their debut album Body Music.

White Noise was premiered this on Zane Lowes Radio 1 show as the " Hottest Track In The World Right Now"
And he aint far off. Two of the hottest new talents coming together on a track that will justify all the blog hype. And no doubt be the Number 1 song when British Summer time begins. Released March 24th

POPS BIG FAT RUMOUR -Gaga. Beyonce, Rihanna and Azealia

It's been rumoured and hinted at throughout the internet and blogosphere for a while now. And if the rumours should be true , then we are in for one blisteringly blockbuster of a track. One that will no doubt top every Itunes chart from Germany to Nicaragua , Australia to Japan.
The hype machines are already cranking up for Lady Gaga's 3rd album ArtPop. Then theres Beyonce;s long awaited 5th album , with new material due to premiered at the SuperBowl in a frothnight.
Add Rihanna into the mix , a woman who bangs out worldwide hits on her sleep. Then theres the debut album of one Azealia Banks. Much delayed , but eagerly anticpated.

Now can you imagine Lady Gaga , Beyonce and Rihanna ALL on the ONE record. The three biggest female artists of teh past decade. Joined by one of the brightest stars of 2013 Azealia Banks.

The track titled Ratchet is expected to be the lead single from Gaga's ArtPop album. Initially , it had been announced Gaga was working with Azealia, Then speculation turned to another Beyonce collab following their globe conquering 2010 hook up Telephone.

Now it appears an instrumental of the track has leaked online. As yet there is still no official confirmation on the track , and theres little to gauge from the instrumental. Only that Ratchet sounds like a frenetically bonkers and suitably epic track befitting all four ladies.

Salivating at the prospect of this track is an understatement. We havent had such a huge collection of female talent on one record since Pink , Christina Aguilera , Missy Elliot , Lil Kim and Mya sung Lady Marmalade in 2001. As great as that record was , at the time only Christina and Missy could have been considered huge names. How time shave changed 12 years on as only Pink remains very much a global superstar.

This time however , we have genuinely 3 pop icons on the one record. The run of hits between them in the past 5 years is staggering. The last time we had true pop titans on one record was Britney Spears and Madonna on 2003's Me Against The Music , which admittedly proved underwhelming.

If its true , then Ratchet is sure to be THE song of 2013

SOMETHING FOR THE WEEKEND -10 Essential Songs for Your Weekend

The weekend has landed!! Forget the snow , the sleet , the rain , the general mouldiness of January. Heres 10 essential tracks for this weekend

1. Neon Trees -Everybody Talks
A huge hit in the States last year , I've been tipping this for greatness for a while. Not out until the end of February , this could be the sound of Spring 2013.  A hit of Goteye/Fun. sized proportions

2. Justin Toimberlake feat Jay Z -Suit And Tie

So sexy's back. And in some style.  It's been almost seven years since FutureSex/LoveSounds , so we were not sure what to expect. But we've gotten a slinky , R&B groover that's blowing up worldwide on iTunes. Move over Bieber and Bruno Mars , JT is back for the throne.

3. Calvin Harris feat Ellie Goulding -I Need Your Love

Calvin made chart history this week by notching up his seventh consecutive UK Top 10 from the same album. And what price him claiming an 8th. He's already hinted that this collaboration with Ellie Goulding will eventually be released, Goulding's twee  , ethereal vocals over Harris' clubby beats make it a stand out from his 18 Months album

4. Hurts -Miracle

The Macu duo announced the tracklisting for their hotly anticipated sophomore album Exile this week, This trailer single should give them their first Top 10 in the UK. Coldplay meets Muse over brooding , anthemic beats make for a fantastic taster for the new opus.

5. Heathers -Waiter

The Irish duo wre recently nominated for the Choice Music Prize. This track , is cureently used on the RTe's promo ads for restaurant drama Raw. The chant like refrain gets lodged after one listen

6. Lawson -Learn To Love Again

Fourth single from Andy and the lads. Far more poppy then previous singles. expect another Top 10 for the boys

7. Disclosure feat Sam Smith -Latch

Tbis ones been hanging around since about October and still seduces with every listen. The psot Christmas chart slump has seen it rise again. Big year in store for this duo and guest vocalist Sam Smith

8.  ASAP Rocky feat Skrillex - Wild For The Night

2013 in hip hop begins and ends with this man

9. Bastille -Pompeii

Cant get enough of this track from one of the hotly tipped acts of the year.

10. Christina Aguilera -Army Of Me

Xtina's carrer may be in freefall with the unmitigated flop that is Lotus. Love or hate her , this is a pop injustice. This anthemic , two fingers in the air sassfest desrves to be huge and at least ressurect her flailing career

Timberlake Suits Up For Comeback

Justin Timberlake has unveiled his first new single in 6 years today. Suit And Tie , featuring Jay Z and produced by Timbaland was premiered online at 5am this morning.
The track is already available to buy on iTunes , where its already scaling rapidly and looks a sure fire Number 1

The song is a smooth and sexy R&B jam that resembles Robin Thicke and Frank Ocean to these ears. In short   its an extremely satisfying comeback. And while it may not have the immediecy of a Like I Love You , were sure there are some massive corkers to come from JT this year.

Timberlake has been away too long , and his new album , reportedly titled The 20/20 Experience , should quickly re-establish him as one of the biggest male stars in music. A mantle thats been challenged by /justin Bieber in recent years. Timberlake , however is a different musical kettle of fish.

It's 2013's first big comeback and I could'nt be happier to have JT back. Suit And Tie is available to download now. Watch it go massive , and have a listen below

Calvin Makes Chart History

Scottish dance maestro Calvin Harris has become quite the go to hitmaker in the past few years. And last night he made UK chart history , by scoring his SEVENTH UK Top 10 hit from one single album.
The album in question 18 Months ,released last October , sits currently at Number 2 on the Albums Chart.

It was his latest blockbuster collaboration Drinking From The Bottle , featuring Tinie Tempah , which jumped to a new peak of Number 5 on the singles chart.
The incredible run began in June 2011 with Kelis assisted Bounce hitting Number 2 , then two months later in August , the Grammy nominated Feels So Close also hitting Number 2.
In October , the massive We Found Love , led by Rihanna spent 6 weeks at Number 1.

In April 2012 , Let's Go featuring R&B heavyweight Ne Yo hit Number 2 as did his hook up with fellow Brit , Example on July's We'll Be Coming Back.
Another Number 1 came in October 2012 , with the Florence Welch epicness of Sweet Nothing. The pair had already topped the charts during the Olympics with a Harris remix of Spectrum ,which doesnt feature on 18 Months.

It marks another huge milestone in the Dumfries stars six year career. This week Calvin Harris was nominated for Best British Male at next months Brit Awards.

Britney Back On Top After Nine years

Britney Spears finally returned to the top of the UK charts last night , alongside Will I Am , to grab her first UK Number 1 in NINE years.
Scream And Shout had been hanging around the Top 3 for the past five weeks , before finally ousting X Factor winner James Arthur's Impossible.

Spears last UK Number 1 came in July 2004 , when Everytime spent 2 weeks at the summit. Since then , big hitters like Gimme More , Piece Of Me , Womanizer and Hold It Against Me all failed to hit the top      spot. Overall , it becomes Spears sixth UK Number 1 since 1999's classic Baby , One More Time.

It's further comfort for Spears who recently split with fiance Jason Trawick. It's been reported she's signed on for a residency in Las Vegas reportedly worth $100million. Nice work , if you can get it. That small dip in the ocean should compensate for the money lost from quitting X Factor USA

Destinys Child To Perform At SuperBowl

Destinys child will reportedly reform for next months massive half time show at the SuperBowl. The legendary girlband havent performed together since they split in 2005.
But with the release of a new Valentines Day compilation of romantic tracks plucked from their studio albums entitled quite lazily Love Songs. The girl s are primed to take to the stage together in New Orleans on February 3rd.
They will perform a greatest hits medley as well as new track Nuclear , their first new material since 2004s underwhelming Destiny Fulfilled. The track was produced by Pharell Williams.

Beyonce will headline the halftime show  and is expected to debut new material from her forthcoming 5th album.

Ke$ha's Super Furry Animals

Ke$ha has premiered the the video for the insanely catchy Cmon, the second single to be lifted from her Animal album.
One of her strongest and of course strangest videos to date , the video sees Ke$ha partying with men dressed as furry animals. Just your typical pop video then. The song itself is generic and formulaic as ever , but nobody does great autotuned , throwaway trashy pop like Ke$ha
