THE ALTERNATIVE SOUND OF 2015








So 2015 is upon us and as you've finished the last of the end of year lists ,you'll no doubt be bombarded with tastemakers various tips for musical dominance this year. James Bay , George The Poet , Years and Years , Rae Morris , Raury amongst the many names tipped for greatness this year.
But The Playlist always likes to delve a little more deeper and more uconventionally at acts that have been plying their trades for years and could finally break through that glass ceiling in 2015



SIRPAUL

Flamboyant , sexy , controversial and gloriously NSFW are just some of the adjectives and terms that could be best described to sum up New York electropop prince SIRPAUL.
Having been around since 2004 when he released debut album Switch ,  you could say hes already somewhat of a veteran. His most recent album Seventh Star was released back in November and his latest track Turning Me On sees its remix bundle drop on iTunes today.

SIRPAUL incorporates all the best elements of electropop into a fusion of hedonistic , euphoric , glittering and sometimes downright dirty and balls deep dance music that is as thrilling as any you'll hear. The showmanship of a male Madonna , this New Yorker is ferociously independent and in control of all aspects of his music and persona.
The sexual edge to his music is none more so demonstrated on the teasing Black Leather , the accompanying video a boner inducing homage to 70's movie Cruising. It sits alongside previous cut In Your Bedroom as provocative come to bed dance music. For SIRPAUL , sexuality is what you make of it. And its this sexually provocative edge and club appeal that further lures you into his sparkly and frenetic New York electropop. Pushing boundaries lyrically and visually

CHRISTIANOSHI



I wrote about thrilling London electropop prospect Christianoshi last year. And its got to said that musically he is living up to all expectations.
Taylor Swift famously sang in 2014 , " you could have been getting down to this sick beat " And with Christianoshi , beats don't cone any sicker.
Take a listen to his latest EP Sick , and listen for yourself. Fuck Me , I Feel Sick ,  Surrender and the banging two fingers vibe of Over Yourself , are well worth your time.
The music and vocals are blisteringly on point. The video for one of his standout tracks Fake Blood should be out soon.
His last foray into music video , the fantastic Trust , ruffled some feathers amongst the thought police. When in fact , the stunning visual was an unpolished portrayal of gay sub culture that just happens to involve drug use.In fact mainstream culture gay or straight , people use drugs. I don't see the video as a glamorisation.  It was a brave choice of video , unwavering in its explicit honesty. Make up your own mind below.
But for something with edge , a knowing understanding of pop nuance and something a little bit more ballsy , Christianoshi deserves to break through in 2015

SLEEVE OF HEARTS


London singer/songwriter Benjamin Lee has been a long time favourite with The Playlist having been the very first unsigned act we covered.
Since then hes released the Haunting You EP and played numerous gigs throughout London. Hes also been in the studio working hard on his debut album

US hip hop artist Robbie Celeste is someone who probably has more potential than most to make a major breakthrough.
The dreadlocked hip hop star has the raw talent , material and star quality needed to truly go stellar. Evidence of this can be found on the stunning EP The French Collection

TIGER LILLY



London singer Tiger Lilly has been plying her trade since 2010 having already independently released two albums by herself.
The Anglo-Persian chanteuse has rich but gentle voice , as demonstrated on the soaring Walk A Mile , a gorgeous empowerment album.

With that voice and songs like that , its only a matter of time before the mainstream takes notice of this enchanting London singer/songwriter. She's already launched her own clothing range with ASOS and performed at London Fashion Week.
In 2013 , she released free EP Revolving Doors. She looks like a star and the FM friendly pop she produces deserves a wider audience. A musical hybrid of Chrissie Hynde rock fiest and Elle Goulding's heart on your sleeve vulnerability

HILL VALLEY HIGH

 


Shropshire six piece Hill Valley High consist of Phil , Olly , Joe , Danny , Finchy and Danny Kai and a blistering blend of rock , punk and pop. Formed in 2006 , the band cite Foo Fighters , Oasis , Biffy Clyro and Blink 182 amongst their influences. And this can be heard with raucous abandon throughout their music. Their music is the sound of youth in rebellion , in love and just having a good time amped up to a hundred
The band have opened for Elliott Minor and Tinie Tempah and played a run of 10 shows in Brazil of all places after a Myspace fan campaign.

PAIGE





Already a highly sought after DJ and producer , the world is set to rage to Paige in 2015. He's been setting dancefloors alight since 2012 , during which time he's toured the US east coast with Swedish superstar DJ Avicii.
Now only a matter of time before he follows in those platinum stained footprints , Paige is a star about to go stellar.
In 2014 he teamed up with 90's R&B legend Deborah cox on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play Number 1 Higher.

A fantastic achievement as well as a statement of intent that this guy will soon be on everyones radar.
